SOLD Quartz (Morion) on Marble
stock #SOLD 19.1-083
Monterosso, Casteinnovo ne Manti
Reggio Emilia Province,
4.6 x 2.2 x 1.4 CM (miniature)
A pair of intergrown doubly terminated black Morion type Quartz on snow white Marble. A great example of the HQLP (High Quality, Low Price) concept, this is a simple, clean and choice piece of a classic type of Quartz. In fine condition as seen, this is from a recent (2018) find that produced a few hundred pieces and we selected just a few from that lot as being esthetic and with reasonable price. The form is textbook clean.
The Marble Quarries of Carrara are world famous source of the highest quality carving and building stone. For centuries these Quarries were the first choice for a pure, brilliant Marble. They have also been the source of limpid Quartz crystals found on occasion that are impressive, colorless and perfect. This is a choice example of this sort of Quartz, flawless and transparent, sitting on the white Marble. The largest prism is a right handed Quartz 1.7 CM tall. A good find of these in 2018 yielded a nice selection of top quality pieces which are not very often available. We selected this from the lot of almost 100 pieces as a very good value, esthetic and with the classic presentation.
Dolomite with Quartz
Traversella, Chiusella Valley, Canavese DistrictMetropolitan city of Tur
5.3 x 3.5 x 2.4 CM (cabinet)
A cute and unusual Dolomite that is in translucent blocky rhombs nestled with clear Quartz crystals. A vintage specimen with old labels ex Pallanza collection. Very good luster and condition, Dolomites from this area of the Piedmont are known in many habits and styles, this one look much more like a French Alpine specimen but is really from the Piedmont.
Epidote -classic Italian
2.2 x 2.2 x 1.8 CM (thumbnail)
Bright lustrous Epidote crystals in a cluster that are topped with a larger compound prism on the top. Largest prisms reach 1 CM which is very large for this locale. The crystals are all gemmy and the largest are in fine condition, a 20X magnification finds some very tiny chips but perfect by naked eye. The Bellacombe area is one of the great classic locales best known for great Garnets, Vesuvianites etc. The Epidote here can be a bright yellow color when small and grades to a honey brown as they get larger. This is a nice example that is well above average for size and esthetics.
A super sharp, clear and lustrous gemmy Adularia crystal is nicely perched on matrix. A very old specimen, ex Roberto Palumbo (Rome, Italy mineral dealer active 1928-1945) with his label. The Feldspar is distinctly twinned as well and perfcely undamaged even at high magnifications. The locality of Monte Forno in the Piedmont has several well known alpine localities on it but also many tiny clefts that were worked mostly by Swiss Strahlers over a very long period. This is a choice piece with the Adularia well above the matrix and presenting well from all sides.
A very large, vividly fluorescent and nicely zoned Phosgenite crystal dominates the sizable matrix. Other areas of Phosgenite are noted on the piece but the main crystal is 4.6 CM across and presents well. What may be an old repair is noted, if so it is not affected by acetone testing and may be a natural crack. Much of the crystal is transparent to translucent and has the classic flat morphology noted from this ancient locale. Even if repaired (the price assumes this is so and is adjusted) this is a choice example and has a very nice presentation. This could also be trimmed to a killer miniature but that would remove many vugs of smaller crystals so we have left this intact. Ex Ara Dildilian and William Haladyz collections, clearly a very old piece.
Choice, quite lustrous green Pyromorphite (originally labeled as Mimetite) from the old locality at Donori, Sardinia. Very good coverage and deep apple green color, a few small crude crystals are seen with strong magnification, but overall this is a botryoidal specimen. Quite three dimensional and in fine condition, this is much richer than most I have seen from the locality. These are now often labelled as being Pyromorphite- Mimetites as it seems there are both species in the deposit and may be zoned.
Choice Val Malenco Garnet specimen with several waxy green rounded Demantoid crystals perched on typical Amphibole matrix. The elongation of the 2.1 CM main crystal is impressive, and shows complex rounded faces. Classic specimen, these have always been prized and this is an older piece, sawn on the back as is common to enable collecting intact. The matrix has some cracks that may be old repairs or typical weakness in the fibrous structure of the matrix. Well above average quality best appreciated in person
