Chalcopyrite with Galena and Sphalerite
stock #18 AX-22-137
Borieva Mine, Madan, Rhodope Mts.
Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria
10.8 x 7.7 x 6.8 CM (cabinet)
price: $2600

Great Chalcopyrite crystals are remarkably rare, these are superb, sharp and quite large. Set on a "melted" Galena matrix with scattered crystals of Sphalerite, the Chalcopyrites are perfect, no chips, cracks or any damage. These have a nice patina and dark brassy color that sets off the well defined striations. Textbook perfect forms these show both single crystals and twins in fine detail. We try to grab any great Chalcopyrite crystals from this region. I believe they are some of the best ever found when they are this well defined. In person this is especially impressive and it is one of the most esthetic we have seen. Individual crystals are just under 5 CM, and the contrast with the matrix is strong. This specimen is also a "floater" it is crystalized all around and displays fine from most any angle.
Skeletal Galena -hoppered epitaxial forms
stock #19.1-355
Ninth of September mine, Madan, Rhodope Mountains
Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria
3.2 x 3.1 x 1.6 CM (thumbnail)
price: $380

An incredible geometric maze made with interlocked stepped cubic crystal structures. A super thumbnail or toenail (it will fit in a TN box) from a 2018 find at the September Ninth Mine in Madan. This one shows intricate examples of epitaxial growth, hoppering and cubic stacking. This small find produced what may be the best ever hoppered skeletal Galena crystals. This is even more impressive in person, and displays well from most any angle. This specimen has some associated Sphalerite that acts a small matrix and gives contrast for the metallic Galena.
Galena with Dolomite and Sphalerite
stock #18 AX-27-091
Ninth of September mine, Madan, Rhodope Mountains
Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria
7.7 x 4.7 x 3.6 CM (cabinet)
price: $380
Worldwide mix summer

Bright metallic Galena with high luster is epitaxially encrusted with Dolomite in a very esthetic manner. Much of the Dolomite is in spherical form and is aligned on crystal edges. In super condition, the specimen is more impressive in person and the crystals have mirror brilliance on many faces. The Madan area mines have been the source of the worlds best Galena for several years, this specimen shows why these are so well respected as a very good value for quality.
Galena- Spinel Twin habit
stock #18-AX-27-133
Krushev Dol Mine, Madan, Rhodope Mts.
Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria
5.9 x 5.6 x 3.2 CM (cabinet)
price: $875
Worldwide mix summer

Superb, textbook example of flattened Spinel twins in a choice Galena specimen. From the finds four years ago that were big news and yeilded some of the best Galenas of all time. This specimen is top notch the crystals are perfect all around, the edges undamaged and the structure looks like extraterrestrial architecture. A few Quartz crystals add a nice accent in contrast to the bright metallic Galena. More impressive in person, this is a killer with display impact far beyond its size.
Sphalerite- gem variety Cleiophane
stock #18.AX-27-101
Ninth of September mine, Madan, Rhodope Mountains
Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria
7.9 x 5.5 x 2.7 CM (cabinet)
price: $330
Worldwide mix summer

Sharp and glasslike gem Sphalerite crystals contrast with the white matrix in an esthetic combination. The Sphalerites are a dark yellow-green best seen when under strong light. The luster is brilliant. From the Madan area of Bulgaria, this zone has produced some extraordinary Sphalerites (and Galenas as well) on occasion. This piece is from a few years ago out of one incredible pocket. Far better than typical specimen with fine 3 dimensional esthetics, there is no damage at all.
Rhodochrosite with Stilbite
stock #17.AX-749
Starnitsa Deposit, Davidkovo, Rhodope Mts.
Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria
4.4 x 4.2 x 2.5 CM (miniature)
price: $160
Pre Holiday 2017

A well formed, brightly colored Rhodochrosite with the unusual associated Stilbite crystals. This comes from the Bulgarian region better known for metallic sulphides and fine Galena. This is from a small find in 2009, but not available to the market until 2015. In excellent condition, the contrast and bright pink color make an attractive display unlike most Bulgarian minerals that are not very colorful. The supply of these is now exhausted and
Sphalerite (gem clear var. Cleiophane) w. Galena and Quartz
stock #WAM-16-309A
Borieva Mine, Madan, Rhodope Mts.
Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria
6.1 x 3.3 x 2 CM (cabinet)
price: $190
Pre Holiday 2017

A fine small cabinet matrix hosting several perfect gem clear Sphalerites on needle Quartz with minor Galena, Pyrite etc. The largest cluster is 1.6 CM and all are glassy yellow green color that is classic for this material. From finds in 2014. The name Cleiophane is not an approved specie of course but it is perhaps the most desirable variety of Sphalerite.
Calcite with Sphalerite and Quartz etc.
stock #A-27-132
Borieva Mine, Madan, Rhodope Mts.
Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria
4.6 x 3.9 x 3.5 CM (miniature)
price: $170
Pre Holiday 2017

A delicate specimen in excellent condition with very pale pink (mangano) Calcites on a matrix of needle Quartz, lustrous Sphalerites and Pyrite. An attractive and nicely composed specimen from the great Madan deposits of Bulgaria. To my taste the Sulfide deposits of this region have produced the most esthetic examples of many species. This is a small but striking piece with quite remarkable slender Quartz that are decorated with tiny crystals of Sphalerite as well.
