A fine and very unusual type of of Smithsonite specimen from Tsumeb. Ex John Schneider collection, this has light pink to violet transparent crystals of Smithsonite densely covering 3 parallel fingers or stalactites of Galena. In excellent condition with wonderful esthetics, this is a really weird but choice Tsumeb specimen.
Duftite on Calcite
9.8 x 7 x 3.7 CM (cabinet)
new june 17
A striking cabinet sized plate of sharp Calcite crystals almost totally encrusted with bright sparkling Duftite micro crystals. In exceptional undamaged condition, Duftite is rare in good display quality specimens but this is a very fine and colorful piece. The individual crystals are more distinct and larger than the more typical Tsumeb smudges. Classic form for the underlying Calcite there is some selective coating noted but overall very little of the white calcite is exposed. Choice.
One of the colorful and desirable minerals from Tsumeb, a nice specimen of bright red Chalcotrichite. The specimen vug has several tufts of red hair crystals and a mass of Calcite that is bright red colored by included Chalcotrichite. The cavity in this specimen is also lined with tiny Dolomite crystals and provides a good protection for the delicate crystals inside.
Sharp crystals of Smithsonite cover a matrix of Cerussite with some twinned crystals showing. The Smithsonites are all perfect and undamaged. A nice association the milky white Smithsonite crystals have nice contrast to the grey Cerussite.
Yellow-hued crystals of transparent Smithsonite up to 2.5 CM long are sticking out in all directions on this complex yet esthetic piece. In outstanding condition overall, there is one crystal with a broken termination that will be hidden on most logical display angles. All of the other crystals are quite perfect. Without analysis I am not sure if this should be called Cadmian Smithsonite as many yellow examples are labelled. Choice and attractive.
Smithsonite on Galena
4 x 3.3 x 2.9 CM (miniature)
Outstanding esthetics, in fine condition a very choice Tsumeb piece. The matrix is the classic type of Tsumeb Galena with small areas of Cerussite best seen with magnification. The Smithsonites contrast nicely with the matrix. Colorless to very pale pink hues on crystals reaching 1.7 CM with fine transparency as well. Displays with great impact despite the small size!
A remarkable series of colorful, sharp and lustrous Anglesites reaching 3.1 CM in a stacked cluster. Matrix includes Balydonite and Mimetite among other unidentified species. The Anglesites show the bi-pyramidal form and have yellow, greenish and orange-brown inclusions along with typical milky white areas. Both unusual and very attractive, an outstanding lead secondary specimen from the amazing Tsumeb!
A single crystal of Anglesite in the pointed habit that has had some dissolution pockets near the base that are now filled with crystallized Arsentsumebite and Mottramite. Nice color contrast and a pearly luster on the Anglesite add character. Some minor bruises exist at 10 magnificatrion these look like typical bruising but at 40X magnification it seems some of this is partly recrystallized so these are more likely semi-healed old in-situ damage or contacts. A nice piece with a rather uncommon association.
