Copper in Calcite
Onganja Mine, Windhoek District
4.9 x 3.8 x 3.5 CM (miniature)
An exceptional (and very unusual) Copper in Calcite from the great Onganja Mine. A large sharp transparent Calcite 3.8 CM across sits on and is included by Copper. The matrix is partly Copper, Malachite and Chalcotrichite. The Calcite is unlike most from Onganja as it is a simple modified rhomb without the complex habits or twinning that is typical from here. This displays well from most any angle, in very good condition with only very minor rub spots. The Onganja mine was once a prolific source of fine Coppers, Cuprites etc but the Calcites were always especially rare and sought after. The mine has been closed and flooded for years. This specimen is quite striking in person and a significant Copper.
Calcite crystals richly included by Copper in branching clusters which gives the Calcite a distinctive color. A very old Dartmouth College Museum and a Carl Bentley labels are included. some Copper is seen outside of the Calcite as well. Choice, minimal damage on outer edges but all the main Calcite is clean and undamaged. A good USA classic copper specimen that is far more affordable than typical.
Copper with and in Calcite
West Vein, Phoenix Mine, Phoenix, Keweenaw County
6.8 x 3.4 x 2 CM (cabinet)
Pre Holiday 2017
Esthetic and not typical at all! Native Copper in leafy tendrils holds and is inside very clear crystals of Calcite. The Calcite is in blocky cube forms with complex growth hills on some faces and colored by the inclusions a bright Copper hue. The Calcites are glassy and the whole composition is very attractive. Some contacts are noted mostly on the backside of the specimen, overall in fine condition. I have not seen another of this style in many years.
