HOLD Zircon -classic locale
stock #HOLD 17.1-813
Store Kufjord, Seiland Island, Alta
5.4 x 3.7 x 3.4 CM (small cabinet/ large miniature)
A complete, perfect and lustrous Zircon crystal sits well exposed on the classic matrix of Store Kufjord. The crystal does not have the cracks, pitting or other flaws seen on most of these. This old locale is one of the most famous for Zircon, every few years a few more pieces are excavated but never very many. This is vividly fluorescent in long wave UV and quite esthetic with a contrast to the white and black matrix.
A choice Sri-Lankan specimen. Crystals of elongated Zircons that are reddish purple in color are up to 2.6 CM on a complex matrix. The specimen includes Sphene crystals to 3.5 CM. Despite some small broken crystals and contacting the piece still presents very well. The luster is a slightly "melted" look but still glassy and bright. Ex collection of Chris Amo, this is a very well formed example of the elongated habit of these Zircons.
Zircon- classic Colorado find
North Cheyenne Canyon, El Paso County
3.4 x 2.6 x 2 CM (miniature)
new june 17
A very sharp group of Zircon crystals with a great history. Collected in Cheyenne Canyon in 1945 by the late Warren Johansson in the last weeks before he was drafted. While awaiting his call up, Warren went on a series of legendary bucket list mineral hunting trips. He had been clued in by Clarence Coil that, long ago, some Zircons had been found in that area but the locale was lost. Warren located this spot and dug several nice pieces, some of the best ever found. This specimen was one of Warrens favorites and was pictured for his memoir. Warren passed in 2015
still active collecting in his 90s. This specimen is a fine Colorado classic from a great field collector.
Zircon (Hydrous)- var Malacon
Ambatofotsy Pegmatite, Soavinandriana, Itasy Region
3.7 x 3.6 x 3.3 CM (miniature)
pre Tucson 2015 update
A rare altered, hydrous variety of Zircon called Malacon, here in distinct crystals. The curved faces and the pearly luster are distinctive from the find a few years ago in Madagascar. No damage and viewable from all sides, a nice example.
