Raipa Mine, Aija Province
7.7 x 3.9 x 3.3 CM (cabinet)
Superb cluster of classic form Axinite crystals with no matrix at all. The largest crystal here is about 6 CM long and the condition of all is excellent, with no damage. These are translucent with a few areas of transparency and the luster is very glassy. The purplish-brown color is distinctive from this find and this is an excellent esthetic cluster with many perfect, choice crystals in all directions. This was a large and important discovery which has provided some excellent quality pieces that were relatively affordable. Excellent value.
Axinite with Prehnite
Grey Cloud Claim
5.5 x 3 x 3 CM (small cabinet/ large miniature)
A colorful and unusual Canadian specimen, sharp glassy Axinite crystals -some of them gem clear- contrast with bright Prehnite crystals. This looks just like some classic Alpine European specimens (Bourg de Oissans etc) but also a bit unique too. The Prehnite crystals show curved faces and are colorless, white and light green some also have a chlorite coating adding more color. Ex Les Hitchings, this was collected in 1960. Close exam finds some edge chipping so this is not fully perfect but it is a very esthetic and well crystalized specimen the best I have seen from this locale, and a choice example.
Axinite with Quartz and Calcite
Nandan, Hechi Prefecture
Guangxi Autonomous Region,
6.5 x 4.3 x 2.4 CM (cabinet)
Well defined, sharp Axinite crystals from a find over 10 years ago in the little known mines of Nandan. At the time these were the first Axinites found in China and as far as I know are still the only good quality specimens found so far. No damage but a few contacts are noted, the crystals are free standing and reach over 1.5 CM.
Axinite (Fe) etched gem crystal
Khaplu, Ghanche District
3.9 x 3.5 x .7 CM (miniature)
A choice gemmmy clear tabular Axinite single crystal with etched edges and sharp centers. Especially glassy luster with elegant growth patterns etced in the lage flat faces. From the Ganchu district in Gilgit area, Pakistan, this was a small but wonderful find. The color in most lighting is a root beer brown with highlights of yellow-orange to red-purple. Somewhat dichroic as well, this changes color and darkens in Polarized light or even when rotated in from of a computer monitor. In fine condition the outer edge may look rough in the photos but it is all complexly recrystallized and etched in a delicate pattern. Distinctly different from Axinites from most other locales, this is an excellent Alpine specimen.
Axinite and Quartz
Dachang Ore Field, Nandan
Guangxi Autonomous Region,
7 x 4.7 x 3.1 CM (cabinet)
An unusually well crystallized Axinite from China that host well perched doubly terminated quartz crystals for a nice contrast. Ex Shields Flynn collection, thois is older material from about 2004. The Nandan mines have mostly been shut down and were only producing good minerals for a few short years. The Axinites from the area are probably the best ever to come out of China. In excellent condition (few were not badly damaged) with the only real bruising at the outside edges. Very nice luster and three dimensional relief.

La Rampe des Commeres, Bourg d'Oisans, Isere
2.4 x 2.1 CM (thumbnail)
A sweet thumbnail of gemmy Axinites perched on a contrasting matix composed of micro crystals of phrenite, diopside etc. From the classic locality of Bourg d'Oisans, this has a lot of flash for its small size. Very affordable for a good, clean example of this classic!
