Quartz with Hematite
stock #21.1-272
Lechang Mine, Lechang County, Shaoguan Prefecture
Guangdong Province, China
6.7 x 4.5 x 3.7 CM (cabinet)
price: $420
Early summer 2021

Red Quartz crystals are clustered with bladed Hematite in an esthetic presentation. This piece has 6 terminated free standing prisms, all with some orange to red color. From the display side there is no visible damage, however, on the back some damage can be seen. The Quartz has very good transparency and the terminations are clean and sharp. This find was big news in the mineral world about 15 years ago, but no new material has come out for quite a while. We have handled quite a lot of the Quartz from Lechang and it is rare to find any without considerable damage; this is much better than typical.

Quartz replacing and coating Glauberite
stock #20.1-883
Irai, Alto Urugual region
Rio Grande do Sul, South Region, Brazil
4.8 x 3.1 x 1.4 CM (miniature)
price: $80
new year 2021

From the zone in Brazil famed for Amethyst geodes, this is something very different from almost any other Quartz. A pair of spindle-like growths of Glauberite that has been altered to and overgrown by Quartz. These are perfect, complete all around, with tiny transparent smokey Quartz sparkling on all sides.

Quartz - optically clear
stock #20.1-881
Penas Blancas, San Pablo de Borbur
Boyaca, Colombia
5.3 x 3.7 x 2.2 CM (small cabinet/ large miniature)
price: $380
new year 2021

Some of the world's clearest and most perfect Quartz has come from the finds in the ridge above the Peñas Blancas Emerald Mines in Boyacá, Colombia. This is an incredibly clean highly lustrous example, one of a small carefully selected suite we obtained at the mine. The luster is brilliant and almost impossible to see in a photograph. This zone has recently produced a lot of good to fine Quartz but very close exam finds that there are very few truly perfect examples, nearly all have at least some chips or rough spots on terminations. This is a remarkably limpid and flawless piece that can act as a prism to make rainbows. Nothing like the average material from here, this is textbook perfect. As is sometimes seen at this locale this piece has some extra faces in corners adding some nice modifications.

Quartz - classic locale
stock #15.1-732
Vizille, Grenoble, Isere
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
9.4 x 7.3 x 7.7 CM (cabinet)
price: $230
new year 2021

The Quartz localities clustered near Grenoble in Isere, France were sources of some of the most classic and special Quartz specimens in the world. This piece shows well the forms of the slender clear Quartz prisms perched on an altered Siderite "Limonite" matrix. In exceptional undamaged condition, this is from the Dr. Warren Johansson collection, he purchased this in 1984. A nice sized cabinet specimen that shows well the clarity and luster that these are famed for at a reasonable cost for one of these European classics.

SOLD Quartz included by Epidote
stock #SOLD 20.1-880
Cisneros, Mun. de Buenaventura
Valle del Cauca, Colombia
4.1 x 3.3 x 2.1 (miniature)
price: $150
new year 2021

A light greenish Quartz that is slightly milky is surrounded by and included with slender Epidote crystals. From a remote locality in the Gold mining areas of the Cauca Valley of Colombia, these greenish Quartz and Epidote have trickled out for several years, never many pieces and usually badly damaged. This is from a small lot we obtained in Colombia in 2018 and is far better than usual. The front or display side offers a large window into the Quartz where the Epidote are like a forest or garden scene. The backside has a clean geometric contact and the condition is overall very good, strong magnification does show some very tiny bruises that are not visible by naked eye, for one of these remarkable crystals this as close to perfect as we have seen. A very different and attractive small Quartz.

Quartz on Quartz replacing Calcite
stock #17.1-123
Langyang Mine
Fujian Province, China
9.6 x 7.2 x 5.3 CM (cabinet)
price: $360
new year 2021

A very attractive, bright sparkling Quartz specimen with an unusual form that looks like snowy mountain peaks. The core of this is a cluster of scalenohedral Calcites some partly replaced by Quartz and then overgrown by a new generation of clear slender Quartz needles much like cactus spines. The core Calcite is fluorescent (red and orange) and it shines through the exterior Quartz. The specimen overall is in fine, undamaged condition only broken on the underside where this was removed. This is from a small find about 5 years ago I have not seen anything quite like this since.

Siderite (pseudomorphing to Limonite) on Quartz
stock #AX-10-688
Allevard, Grenoble, Isère
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
9.1 x 7.3 x 5.1 CM (cabinet)
price: $850
new year 2021

A fine classic French specimen of gemmy Dauphine habit Quartz decorated with Siderites that are partly to fully pseudomorphed. The Siderites retain the flattened rhomb form perfectly and some are actually "skewered" on the slender Quartz. In excellent condition only one Quartz on the edge has any damage and that is not evident on display. Remarkable that this size and delicacy is intact. This was in the collection of William Hladysz for many years, he obtained this from Carter Rich. Carter's label gives some contradictory locality information, he lists La Mure, Bourg de Oisans and Vizille on the label, but these are really separate locales, all in Isere. This is clearly from Isere but almost certainly from Allevard. Siderite of this sort is not typical of Bourg de Oisans although the Quartz is. The Allevard locality in the same region is assured by our French colleagues as accurate, they know the zone well. Overall a very impressive display piece of classic Alpine minerals from this famed zone above Grenoble. Choice specimens like this are almost never seen for sale, especially in the USA.

Quartz - gem
stock #20.1-308-(LW328)
Lasselville, Town of Ephratah, Fulton County
New York, United States
1.8 x 1.4 x 1.2 CM (thumbnail)
price: $130
new year 2021

A perfect thumbnail of gem-clear Quartz with a form that looks a lot like a Herkimer Diamond but is from the less well-known locality of Lasselville in Fulton County, NY. No damage, with fine esthetics, collected in 1972 by Larry White. This had been in his thumbnail collection for more than 40 years.
