Covellite with Pyrite Quartz
stock #18-AX-30-047
Leonard Mine, Butte, Silver Bow County
Montana, United States
4.8 x 4.3 x 3 CM (miniature)
price: $850

While Covellite is a fairly common Copper mineral, crystals are very rare and good crystals are really only known from two locales (Italy and Butte) both locales are gone forever, these are true classics. A nice old Leonard mine Covellite with several free standing crystals and choice patina. This has a vintage label (1940 era?) from Continental minerals. The Covellites on this piece are of the thin blade type, very delicate and are well intergrown. The iridescence is a purple to blue with some reddish hints, this displays especially well under strong lighting as the metallic patina is very bright. Much better in person.
Covellite with Pyrite
stock #0195-JM-1294
Leonard Mine, Butte, Silver Bow County
Montana, United States
5.4 x 4.3 x 3.2 CM (cabinet)
price: $750

Several free standing crystals of Covellite on different sides of the Pyrite matrix are showing dark blue patina. From the remarkable collection of John Marshall who worked at the mine from 1950 to 51. John worked as a miner despite his Harvard education he enjoyed the direct contact and collecting during his lunch breaks. His hand painted mark is on the specimen #1294. The crystals are quite lustrous and in rather good but not perfect condition as is typical for this delicate mineral, far better than average. The Pyrite is in both small octahedrons and other more complex pyritohedrons. The Covellites of Butte have always been prized and are hard to find with any quality and often incredibly costly when they are exceptional A good value.
Covellite -iridescent crystals ex. Conklin
stock #16.1-507
Leonard Mine, 3800 foot level, Butte
Montana, United States
3.6 x 2.5 x 2.5 (miniature)
price: $280
new june 17

A fine, sharp, well crystallized Butte Covellite collected in Butte before 1966 by Paul Heissfeld. Comes with Heissfeld and Larry Conklin labels. Larry notes: An excellent mass of large crystals and no matrix. Classic form and habit, very good blue and gold iridescence amid the dark crystals. Covellite crystals of any size are rare and best known from just two localities, both long closed.
