Elbaite -gem clear crystal
Pederniera Claim, Sao Jose da Safira, Doce Valley
4.2 x .8 x .5 CM (miniature)
A clear sharp pair of parallel crystals with slight hint of zoning. Pretty much all gem grade, undamaged and cleanly terminated, this is an affordable and attractive Tourmaline. Since the crystals are rather flat they also transmit light well and are brilliant with any backlight. From finds at the famed Pederneira in 2009.
Elbaite -unusual form
Jove Lauriano claim, Linopolis, Divinio das Laranjeiras
5 x 1.4 x 1.2 CM (miniature)
An attractive but unusual Elbaite from a little known locality in Minas Gerais, the Jove Lauriano claim. A tapering crystal with a dark top that spreads out holding many tiny terminations. The shaft of the crystal is a translucent to transparent gemmy deep green, it looks dark at first glance but with backlighting the translucency is very evident. It is common to find transparent tops on dark opaque shafts but this is the reverse of that. No damage, a choice yet atypical Elbaite from the Larry White collection, his number 464, according to his catalog obtained from Tony Thurston in 1983. This locality is not well documented but produced a few nice crystals of this habit long ago.
Elbaite -Rubellite gem crystal
Cruzeiro Mine, Sao Jose de Safira
3.5 x 1 x .7 CM (small miniature/ large thumbnail (toenail))
100 percent gem grade Rubellite, mostly a fine cranberry red color with a lightly yellow zoning at the termination. An older Cruzeiro (Brazil) crystal the color is unusually intense for this locality, this looks similar to some Santa Rosa and Jonas mine crystals yet has a sightly different hue. In excellent condition as seen, with even a little backlighting this glows like red glass. The inside is very clean, this is all facet grade that has avoided the cutting wheel. Choice and better in person. Ex John Buckley collection we think this is a 1970 era piece.
Elbaite -gem Tourmaline
Usakos, Karibib District
2.7 x .9 x .9 CM (thumbnail)
A single, doubly terminated and gemmy clear Elbaite crystal from the Karibib. Namibian gem Tourmaline of any quality has become quite uncommon, it was last being found almost 20 years ago. Complete and in nice condition this one shows the striated faces and flat terminations that is typical of these Karibib crystals. Nearly all facet grade, the interior is transparent and clear deep green.
Elbaite on Quartz
Paprok, Kamdesh District
3.3 x 1.9 x .9 CM (small miniature/ large thumbnail (toenail))
A cute thumbnail featuring a zoned Elbaite crystal 2.3 CM long. Complete, undamaged and terminated, the color is a mint pastel green. With strong magnification a tiny Hambergite crystal is seen on one face of the Tourmaline.
A fine large old Tourmaline crystal from Barra de Salinas, formerly in the famed Smale collection. Deep green color, excellent gem clarity this weighs 84 grams. Best displayed with some backlighting as it is dark without. The complex termination is a series of staggered chisel tips looking like a skyline. The front display side is in very good condition, the backside (last photo) has contacts/chipping that are not seen from the front or sides. The architectural structure of the main prism, very glassy luster and deep striations makes this stand out as a choice Brazilian gem.
A delicate, gem crystal of slender multi color Tourmaline is perched on a mix of lilac Lepidolite and colorless Topaz. Doubly terminated and gem clear, there are 5 color changes along the length of the prism. There is a single repair here that needs to be mentioned, it keeps the price low yet does not affect display as seen. A pretty, lustrous and eyecatching Paprock gem.
Silky "catseye" luster in these bicolor crystals makes a complex but impressive cluster. Most every crystal in this specimen is doubly terminated with one end pointed the other a flat basal termination. In impressive condition this is an older (25 years plus) Brazilian gem. The darkest colored areas are mostly opaque but the majority of the prisms are translucent and on thin edges transparent. With backlighting the crystals all show several areas of zoning, but in normal display these seem to have two main zones and silky texture is pronounced. Most of the faces have many tiny accicular crystals attached at jumbled angles, adding a nice sparkle in person. The longest crystal in this cluster is 8.5 CM. An excellent example of this style and habit not often available.
