Aragonite on Calcite on Fluorite
stock #19.1-363
Cave-in-Rock, Hardin County
Illinois, United States
6.3 x 3.9 x 3.3 CM (cabinet)
price: $170

An unusual old specimen from Cave in Rock, southern Illinois. Etched Yellow Fluorite with a hint of purple zoning is the matrix for a treelike spray of slender spikey Calcite crystals that are coated with secondary aragonite. Some of the Calcites have stair-stepped epitaxial growths along the prisms. Ex Larry Conklin with his label, This looks very much like some Minerva #1 mine specimens but Conklins laberl only lists Cave in Rock. A delicate, sculptural piece that is also somewhat fluorescent.
Witherite - fine US classic
stock #15.1-1060 CN-2017
Minerva #1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Hardin County
Illinois, United States
8.8 x 6.7 x 4.1 CM (cabinet)
price: $750

An excellent old time USA Witherite with great form from the Minerva #1 mine. Classic early 1960s vintage. Ex Dufoe and Noll collections, with fat barrel shape crystals showing well stepped striations on the edges. This specimen also has a good light yellow-orange color and is much more attractive than the more usual plain white. Alston Moor in England and the Minerva mine, (all long closed) produced all of the fine Witherites ever found. Fine pieces like this are now only available from older collections and getting very scarce. This is an especially choice piece, has great wet look luster and displays great from several angles.
Fluorite - purple, blue, yellow etc
stock #18-AX-18-064
Rosiclare Level, Denton Mine, Haris Creek Sub-district, Hardin County
Illinois, United States
8.1 x 6 x 4.8 CM (cabinet)
price: $490
Worldwide mix summer

A choice, sharp old Rosiclaire, Illinois Fluorite dusted with a little sparkling Quartz. Very good translucency, this backlights very well and shows multiple internal colors. In sunlight or daylight balanced light sources this is a nice blue with hints of yellow and some red internal color. Incandescent lighting turns this a more purple color. Overall in very good condition, a close exam finds some very tiny edge bruises but these are clearly not distracting yet keep the price low. Better in person, strong display and now getting very hard to find this quality at reasonable costs.
Benstonite on Fluorite
stock #15.1-967-SM-3121
Cave-in-Rock, Hardin County
Illinois, United States
6.7 x 5.7 x 4.6 CM (cabinet)
price: $450
Worldwide mix summer

Benstonite in unusual distinct crystals clustered on Fluorite cubes. Ex Charles Noll collection, a choice example of this uncommon mineral that has always been a very desirable rarity from this region. The Fluorite cubes are also very sharp and clean with strong Fluorescence. These are only available from older collections and most are just a whitish coating on other minerals. This almost certainly came from the Minerva mine but the label does not give that specific detail so we leave this listed as Cave-in Rock only.
Barite on Fluorite
stock #18-AX-13-013
Minerva Mine #1, Rosiclare Level, Cave in Rock
Illinois, United States
10.4 x 6.5 x 3.3 CM (cabinet)
price: $130
Worldwide mix summer

Sharp contrast of the bluish white Barite crystals with the purple Fluorites in a classic combination. Ex York collection. This is dated 1992, so it is from the last part of the mining period. In fine condition the Barites are all perfect, undamaged, there are some very tiny cleaves on Fluorites that is not noticeable. A modern US classic that is better in person.
Fluorite- Zoned classic
stock #18.1-107
Annabel Lee Mine, Bethel Level, North End, Hardin County
Illinois, United States
7.5 x 6.1 x 3.8 CM (cabinet)
price: $400
Spring update

Great zoning of orange/yellow to purple cubes with very fine translucency. Classic old specimen from the Anabelle Lee mine in a complex cluster of jumbled elongated cubes that displays well on several angles. Small edge bruises and etched contacts keep this from being a super expensive specimen, but it is forgivable with such rich color, habit and geometry. Relatively affordable, beautiful and classic.
Fluorite - Zoned with Calcite
stock #17.1-685-A18x
Annabel Lee Mine, Bethel Level, North End, Hardin County
Illinois, United States
6.5 x 5.3 x 4.1 CM (cabinet)
price: $880
Pre Holiday 2017

A classic Cave in Rock Fluorite with yellow and orange cores and purple outer zoning. Some well defined etching and pitting contrasts well with the sharper corners and edges. The Calcites are distinctive of the Annabelle Lee mine, and quite a nice esthetic addition. The condition of the display face is very good the only damage or contacting is the outer edges and backside where this was removed. A lot of good display impact for the size. Choice Fluorites of this quality are fast becoming very very expensive. As the mines have now been closed for decades, there will never be more of these and only turn up in older collections.
Fluorite - zoned, classic yellow- purple
stock #17.1-AX-29=058
Minerva #1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Hardin County
Illinois, United States
6.1 x 4.9 x 4.1 CM (cabinet)
price: $1150
Pre Holiday 2017

An American classic, sharp Fluorite with excellent color and form from the Minerva #1. Complex cubic stepping and hoppers on several faces and a few Chalcopyrite crystals add a nice accent. The Fluorite cubes are very sharp, in fine condition, colorful and translucent to transparent. Looks great from several angles and with backlighting is really dramatic. The photos here are NOT backlit so it looks as it will in a typical display without special lighting. Sadly such quality Illinois Fluorites are fast becoming rare and expensive. No damage except on the underside where it was attached, this is choice and clean on all display faces.
