A complete six ray star of golden Rutile needles radiating from a flat bright Hematite crtystal. Two small additional Hematites with Rutile are also present.Fine Brazilian Rutile twins on Hematite crystals are one of the mineral kingdoms wonders. This can be displayed from either side though the view shown is my preference. A choice textbook example of this wonderful crystal habit.
Fine Brazilian Rutile twins on Hematite crystals are one of the mineral kingdoms wonders. This specimen shows well the mirror bright Hematite crystal with a flat habit hosting radiating golden Rutile needles. In fine condition as seen, the specimen can be viewed from either side and shows textbook quality the star radiating form with epitaxial alignment. Choice.
Sharp transparent Magnesite crystals are a contrasting matrix for a sharp tabular silver-black Hematite crystal. A fine association that is very esthetic and a choice specimen from this important Brazilian locality. This sort of gem clear Magnesites from here may be the best in the world for the specie. The mirror bright Hematite added this cluster brings it up to a high level of esthetics. Far more striking in person this is displayable from several angles and is in fine condition too.
Beryl var Emerald
Carnaiba Mine, Pindobacu, Campo Formoso
2.3 x 1.5 x .9 CM (thumbnail)
Worldwide mix summer
A flattened Emerald prism that is doubly terminated (crude at one end), translucent and has a few dark inclusions. From the Camp Formoso zone of Bahia, Brazil, this was in the Hitchings collection and came out over 20 years ago. This zone still produces some small Emeralds but much less often than in the past. On our r visit there last year we did not find a single good specimen to purchase, the mines seem to be minimally active. This is a good example of the style of Emerald from this region, and shows well the typical flattened hexagon form.
Uvite on Magnesite
10.3 x 7.4 x 4.8 CM (cabinet)
Bright green gemmy Uvite Tourmalines on a contrasting Pink Magnesite crystallized matrix. From finds in Brumado by the late Luis Menezes a decade ago, a very choice specimen that is no longer available in this fine quality. In excellent undamaged condition this is a lustrous, showy cabinet display piece.
Big and lustrous with red highlights this is translucent to transparent on edges with a brilliant red when backlit. Crude but complete termination on both ends makes this an extra nice example. Better in person this is well above average, and not being found now.
From the now classic finds at Brumado, a very well composed cluster of glassy deep green crystals. In fine condition with a few tiny flecks of adhering quartz otherwise this is all Uvite. Prior to these finds almost all known Uvite was black. There seems to be little to no new production now.
A modern classic, these star shaped radial rutile specimens are simply fantastic. When first found in Brazil, these were a huge sensation, the best ever seen. This is a good, small miniature that is far less expensive than larger examples, but still has a good impact. With brilliant luster, this specimen is a textbook example of epitaxy. These were rather plentiful from Brazilian dealers 3 years ago but are now getting scarce.
