Big and lustrous with red highlights this is translucent to transparent on edges with a brilliant red when backlit. Crude but complete termination on both ends makes this an extra nice example. Better in person this is well above average, and not being found now.
Fluorite on Dolomite
Shangbao Pyrite Mine, Leiyang
6.8 x 5.9 x 3 CM (cabinet)
Choice and very esthetic, old type of Fluorite in stepped, modified cubo-octahedral crystals perched on contrasting milky Dolomite. Dark purple phantoms are seen in the center of the main crystals where the glassy "windowpane" face looks into the clear interiors. From vintage 2002 finds at Shangbao, this habit has not been found for several years. In fine condition there is a small clean contact on the back corner of the smaller crystal but no damage.
Diopside- gemmy crystals on matrix
stock #AX- 35-524
Calvin Mitchell Prospect, Dekalb, St Lawrence County
4.3 x 4 x 2.6 CM (miniature)
Fine and sharp gem clear Diopside crystals on a Diopside matrix in excellent condition. From the famed Dekalb classic location made famous in the 1800s, The largest crystal is 2.3 CM long and has fine transparency and a nice yellow-green color. This was collected by and in the collection of S. Alverson in the last good find over 4 decades ago. Since that pocket there have been no more with this clarity and glassy luster. Outstanding for the location and an esthetic piece as well!
Sharp crystals of Smithsonite cover a matrix of Cerussite with some twinned crystals showing. The Smithsonites are all perfect and undamaged. A nice association the milky white Smithsonite crystals have nice contrast to the grey Cerussite.
Yellow-hued crystals of transparent Smithsonite up to 2.5 CM long are sticking out in all directions on this complex yet esthetic piece. In outstanding condition overall, there is one crystal with a broken termination that will be hidden on most logical display angles. All of the other crystals are quite perfect. Without analysis I am not sure if this should be called Cadmian Smithsonite as many yellow examples are labelled. Choice and attractive.
A super and unusual thumbnail gem crystal with a clear red Rubellite exterior that lets the green-blue inner core be seen like a racing stripe. Choice and better in person, there is a tiny bit of adhering matrix and one small clean contact with no damage. This crystal is also dichroic with a good color shift seen when rotated in front of a light source like a computer screen. Small but with a good display impact far larger than the size!
Kermesite with Calcite
Caiwa Mine, Danfeng Co. Shangluo Prefecture
6.5 x 5.5 x 3.1 CM (cabinet)
A very nice display specimen of Kermesite crystals on matrix from the one time find that produced the best ever. Typical crude terminations on sharp crystals to nearly 3CM tall standing up from the matrix. In person the red glints of the Kermesite is very evident. Micro crystals of an unknown mineral that seems to be Valentinite are a bonus. Delicate and fine, these are now very hard to find and expensive when available. A fine value ex Shields Flynn collection obtained from Bert Ottens.
Clean and rich pink Apatite crystals in stacked epitaxial arrangements. From a small recent find at La Marina emerald mine. A few of the intersections and backsides are coated with unidentified micro crystals of what seems to be 2 differnt minerals, presumably Phosphates. The last time this style of Apatite was found was over 8 years ago. We had the good fortune to purchase a pocket at that time and several of those specimens were later illustrated in the Mineralogical Record, Lapis special edition etc. This small lot from the new find is of the same quality and habit as the earlier, now classic and unavailable material. Fine glassy luster and in very good condition as seen.
