Pyrophyllite - very well crystallized
Indian Gulch Mine, Santa Cruz Mountain, Hornitos Mining District, Maripo
13.6 x 9.3 x 8.2 CM (cabinet)
Pyrophyllite is not often seen in an esthetic, collectable grade mineral specimen but it can be striking. This is both a huge specimen for this specie and an exceptional one, the best I have ever handled. Large radiating clusters reach 4 CM across. This piece was sold by the Schortmann brothers almost 70 years ago (their label did not survive) and was in the Cook family collection on display since then. The Pyrophyllite crystals are in sprays some of which are above the matrix and show terminations which is very rare. Shining golden metallic luster is seen on all sides except the base where this was removed from the host rock. In extraordinary condition and brilliant in person, from a long closed mine, an important piece, as fine as this specie gets.
