Kyanite on Quartz
Barra do Salinas Mining District, Coronel Murta
12.5 x 7.9 x 4.2 CM (cabinet)
Terminated and gemmy, bright blue Kyanite crystals are well exposed on a Quartz matrix. The Kyanites are transparent and most have a deeper blue "racing stripe" down the center of the flat blades. Many of the crystals are doubly terminated and reach 10 CM long. Kyanite is a fairly common mineral but it is certainly not common in such an esthetic, delicate array. Exceptional color and quality, it is hard to capture the luster of the crystals in photographs. When this is backlit the intense blue color is incredible.
This is not at all a typical Kyanite, the crystals are vivid blue, gem clear and are sharply terminated. Well presented on a massive Quartz matrix, these crystals are perfectly exposed and brilliant in person. With backlighting this glows an intense blue hue. Some zoning is noted with the "stripes" of clear and deep blue running along the C axis of the crystals. Huge amounts of Kyanite come out of Brazil but super gem grade display pieces are very rare, this is a superb example with a lot of display impact. Better in person.
A transparent, glassy single crystal of Kyanite on a small matrix of Quartz. Perfect, complete and very lustrous, this slender crystal comes from a well known Pegmatite and is in remarkable, undamaged condition. With even a weak backlight this glows a rich blue and looks fine from any angle. Kyanite is not a rare mineral but this quality is very uncommon and the proportions are very elegant.
