SOLD Astrophyllite- rare Northeastern USA
stock #SOLD 20.1-166
Hurricane Mountain, North Conway, Carroll County
3.7 x 1.6 x .5 CM (small miniature/ large thumbnail (toenail))
A remarkable cluster of Astrophyllite crystals that at some angles looks almost like Brookite mass. No matrix and with a good brassy iridescent luster, this is the best example I have ever seen from the Northeastern USA, and very fine from anyplace. Collected by Les Hitchings sometime in the 60's on Hurricane Mountain, this is very unlike typical specimens that are more micacous or fibrous and lay flat on encasing matrix. Some references list Astropyllite as a "very rare" Potassium, Iron, Titanium Silicate mineral, but in recent years there have been many specimens from the Khibiny Massif coming out, so this is no longer such a rare specie. However, well defined crystals are still rare and this is a very choice example. The ends have some bruises or contacts but overall this is fantastic for a USA specimen.
