Elbaite - Indicolite
stock #17.1-549
Barra do Salinas Mining District, Coronel Murta
Minas Gerais, Brazil
4.9 x 3.5 x 3.4 CM (miniature)
price: $1450
Spring 2020

A complex dark Tourmaline crystal that when backlit explodes with an intense deep indigo blue with a zone of green on the edges. From old finds at the remarkable locality of Barra do Salinas which is well known for very colorful and often deeply etched gem crystals. This specimen is the termination of complex prism, the faces are lustrous and the overall weight is 78 Grams, nearly all of good gem grade. There is old edge chipping most of which has been recrystallized, but despite the imperfections the color and luster make this a striking piece. Without any backlighting this is fairly dark and may look like a schorl at first, but when well lit the color is outstanding.

Childrenite- Eosphorite (gemmy with unusual color)
stock #19.1-805
Mendez Pimentel
Minas Gerais, Brazil
2.6 x 1.8 x .9 CM (thumbnail)
price: $390
Spring 2020

A super single crystal thumbnail of red-orange Childrenite ex John Buckley Collection. This is translucent to transparent and has internal zoning. From a find many years ago at Mendes Pimental, there were very few found with this unusual color, it is possibly closer to the Eosphorite end of the series though the original testing called this Childrenite, we have not re analyzed this. Complete and well terminated, one part of the termination hosts a zone of tiny doubly terminated Quartz crystals which adds a nice contrast. No matter the specie this is a choice colorful example of both ends of the series.

Topaz
stock #16.1-573
Teofilo Otoni, Mucuri Valley
Minas Gerais, Brazil
6.2 x 3.1 x 2.7 CM (cabinet)
price: $450
Spring 2020

A main crystal that is nearly all gem clear and is over 6 CM tall shows glass clear faces on 3 sides with one face etched, included and with complex modifications. The condition is very good, the upper half is all gem clear and the lower part has additional smaller crystals attached. A very nice Topaz from the prolific region of Teofilo Otoni, this weighs a hefty 91.4 grams.

Titanite var. Sphene
stock #15.1-943-(CN2901)
Capelinha
Minas Gerais, Brazil
4.8 x 4.2 x 2.8 CM (miniature)
price: $440
Spring 2020

A choice cluster of old time Sphene crystals with a small bit of matrix. In person these are quite gemmy, very transparent and have fantastic growth structures on several faces. In fine condition there is one small chip on a crystal edge that is the logical base of the specimen and not visible on display. Ex Commercial Mineral Corp (a NYC based dealer) The label for this dates after 1956 though the vintage is likely mid sixties. Ex Charles M. Noll and Jimmie Dufoe collections as well. Presents well from several angles, best appreciated in person.

Elbaite -multi color zoned
stock #17.1-412
Santa Rosa
Minas Gerais, Brazil
3 x 1.5 x 1.4 CM (small miniature/ large thumbnail (toenail))
price: $420

A glassy, clean and many colored crystal of Elbaite from an old find (1970 vintage) at Santa Rosa. I count four or five colors at least with some gentle gradations. The termination is the flat basal type and has a hint of blue in some lighting but not so strong as a classic blue cap. In excellent condition though there are some tiny rough spots that are sub millimeter in size and not easy to see. A very nice gem crystal with a choice color pallet zoning from this get locale.

Elbaite -gem clear crystal
stock #18.1-337
Pederneira Mine, Sao Jose da Safira, Doce Valley
Minas Gerais, Brazil
4.2 x .8 x .5 CM (miniature)
price: $220

A clear sharp pair of parallel crystals with slight hint of zoning. Pretty much all gem grade, undamaged and cleanly terminated, this is an affordable and attractive Tourmaline. Since the crystals are rather flat they also transmit light well and are brilliant with any backlight. From finds at the famed Pederneira in 2009.

Kyanite -gem clear crystal
stock #19.1-419
Capelinha
Minas Gerais, Brazil
7.8 x .8 x .3 CM (cabinet)
price: $350

A transparent, glassy single crystal of Kyanite on a small matrix of Quartz. Perfect, complete and very lustrous, this slender crystal comes from a well known Pegmatite and is in remarkable, undamaged condition. With even a weak backlight this glows a rich blue and looks fine from any angle. Kyanite is not a rare mineral but this quality is very uncommon and the proportions are very elegant.

Elbaite -unusual form
stock #AX-7-464
Jove Lauriano claim, Linopolis, Divinio das Laranjeiras
Minas Gerais, Brazil
5 x 1.4 x 1.2 CM (miniature)
price: $350

An attractive but unusual Elbaite from a little known locality in Minas Gerais, the Jove Lauriano claim. A tapering crystal with a dark top that spreads out holding many tiny terminations. The shaft of the crystal is a translucent to transparent gemmy deep green, it looks dark at first glance but with backlighting the translucency is very evident. It is common to find transparent tops on dark opaque shafts but this is the reverse of that. No damage, a choice yet atypical Elbaite from the Larry White collection, his number 464, according to his catalog obtained from Tony Thurston in 1983. This locality is not well documented but produced a few nice crystals of this habit long ago.
