Spania Dolina, Banska Bystrica County
Banska Bystrica Region,
6.2 x 3.9 x 3.1 CM (small cabinet/ large miniature)
A fairly dense deep blue color mass of crystalized Posnjakite from Spania Dolina. This ancient Copper mine has been worked for over 1000 years and probably even in the Neolithic era. At times known as Herrungrund (German periods often seen on old labels). This deposit is very large and has many old mines along a belt of several kilometers. This zone has produced a number of colorful Copper species along the oxidized zone of the deposit. Thgis is a choice specimen for the area.
Rhodochrosite with Quartz- cassic
American Tunnel Mine, Silverton, San Juan Co.
7.4 x 5.1 x 3.1 CM (cabinet)
Well defined and sharp rhombs of Rhodochrosite from the classic Colorado locale of the American Tunnel in Silverton. This is the "other" Colorado Rhodo locality that was world famed long before the great finds at Sweet Home. The Am Tunnel Rhodos are also not in the same high price bracket as Sweet Home, but can be quite choice. The locality had a long history of producing Rhodochrosite specimens usually a more pale pink or less well formed. This is a unusually attractive specimen with sharp red crystals that are well exposed and esthetic. Three dimensional, undamaged and far better than usual with a contrasting matrix. Ex collection of R and A Palmer, W Hladysz and A Dilldallion.
Berg Aukus, Grootfontein District
8.3 x 6 x 4.1 CM (cabinet)
A superb cabinet specimen of Descloizite crystals in two generations. The larger more recent Descloizite rests on a druze of earlier small orange and red crystals. The larger crystals are arranged in fans, stacks and bundles in extraordinary forms. No damage, sharp and very three dimensional. The worlds best Descloisites all came from Berg Aukus, and these were in many exotic habits and complex twins. The mine is gone and there will be no more, good specimens have become highly desirable and scarce. This specimen is certainly top quality for the specie and locale with very unusual structures. Far better in person, a killer display and the crystalography is amazing.
Sierra de la Cruz, Municipio de Sierra Mojada
7.3 x 6 x 3.7 CM (cabinet)
Blocky habit Vesuvianite crystals that are doubly terminated are studding a contrasting Rhyolite matrix. From very old finds at the locality once called Lago de Jaco, now Sierra de la Cruz. The Vesuvianites are well exposed from the matrix and are nearly all bi color. This habit of Vesuvianite was collected before 1980, there have been no more in recent years.
A rare doubly terminated, complete enstatite (Hypersthene) crystal 2 CM long on bright red Alamandine. From the famed Gore Mt Garnet locality that produced huge masses of Almandine years ago. Hypersthene was also fairly common but mostly massive or very poorly formed. This Enstatite is crude but with clear form with a melted edge look. The crystal is perfect, undamaged and nicely perched on the Garnet matrix, this is not typically a pretty mineral but this crystal has charm. This is the best formed and most distinct Enstatite I have seen from the locale, a fine thumbnail for the region.
A sharp and distinct pair of Rutile crystals are penetration twinned on matrix. An older Graves Mt. specimen, the red color and satin luster are very fine for the locale. Textbook forms and a nice display specimen, the front side seen on display is perfectly damage free but the underside and one edge (out of sight) have contacts. Choice.
Pyrargyrite on Manganoan Calcite
Pachapaqui District, Bolognesi Province
7 x 4.9 x 4.2 CM (cabinet)
Pyrargyrite crystals in small clusters and individuals are scattered on a pink Manganoan Calcite matrix. Individual crystals are up to 7MM. Some of the edge crystals have some chipping but the center portion is pristine. A few of the small clusters have the "raspberry" form and are hollow crystal aggregates best appreciated with magnification. A nice ruby Silver specimen that has a nice colored micro crystalline matrix as a contrast.
Super thumbnail of gem Tourmailne with the steep termination from the world famed Dunton pocket at Newry. A classic US Elbaite with sharp form, bright luster and 100 percent gemmy clear. A small Quartz crystal adds a nice accent, the crystal is also dichroic and damage free. One of the most significant tourmaline discoveries of all time, the Dunton Quarry pocket is legendary. The steep terminations on some green crystals like this were unusually distinctive. These have become quite scare in this quality.
