Rhodochrosite with Quartz
stock #10.1-194
Wudong Mine, Wuzhou Prefecture
Guangxi Province, China
2 x 1.6 x .8 CM (thumbnail)
price: $155
Spring 2020

Small, but very cute, cluster of sharp and slightly-etched Rhodochrosite rhombs. Several faces show complex stepped modifications that add extra pop. Aside from a tiny spray of Quartz crystals, there is no matrix, just Rhodochrosite. This thumbnail from an important find at Wuzoh in 2009, this was one of the last of this form, as most later pockets have more flattened and disk-like crystals. Nice color, form and presentation, if this was larger, it would be a very costly specimen!
SOLD Franklinite, single complete octahedron
stock #SOLD 15.1-628
Franklin Mine, Franklin Mining District, Sussex County
New Jersey, United States
2.9 x 2.7 x 2.1 CM (thumbnail)
price: $0
Spring 2020

A single black octrahedral crystal from vintage 1930's ex. Warren Johansson collection. Dr Johansson was a prolific field collector and active trader well into his nineties. His label is with the specimen. Very nice face modifications and a slight melted look as is classic for the specie. Most Frankinites have considerable damage or are incomplete, but this one is all there, with only minor edge rough spots and one clean contact. Of course this is from the type locality which is really the only source of any sizable crystals worldwide, yet these were at one time plentiful in Franklin. A nice piece that can fit a Thumbnail box but just barely.
Crocoite on Gibbsite
stock #20.1-214
Adelaide Mine Dundas Mineral Field, Zeehan District,West Coast Municipal
Tasmania, Australia
9.5 x 6 x 2.6 CM (cabinet)
price: $390
Spring 2020

Slender bright red-orange crystals of Crocoite rise above a contrasting white Gibbsite matrix. A choice specimen with most crystals in good shape, terminated and a few with hoppered form. Minimal damage as is almost inevitable with this sort of fine needles, but most is not visible by naked eye. From a 2014 pocket, this has the color and luster that is most desired, the needles are up to 1.6 CM.
Babingtonite with Prehnite and Quartz
stock #20.1-213
Hongquizhen Quarry, Meigu County, Liangshan Yi Pref.
Sichuan, China
7.8 x 6.1 x 3.9 CM (cabinet)
price: $450
Spring 2020

a cluster of sharp Babingtonite crystals perched nicely on a matrix of Prehnite and clear Quartz crystals. The Babingtonite has good mid range natural luster, in our experience the very bright luster on some pieces is often a result of an oiling or plastic coating, which is for us a form of fakery. This is clearly a fully natural specimen ex Shields Flynn collection. For almost a century the wolds best Babingtonites were from a small quarry in Western Massachusetts. Very few were ever found of this size and quality. Even today a specimen from Massachusets this fine would be sold quickly for thousands. The Chinese discovery has allowed many more people to own a choice piece for reasonable cost..
