Calcite with minor Realgar
stock #5.1-083
Shimen (Jiepiayu) Mine, Shimen County, Changde Prefecture
Hunan Province, China
17x13 cm (cabinet)
price: $1200

A perfect condition large (11.5 cm) twin calcite sits esthetically on top of a mound of smaller calcites and intermingled tiny realgar crystals. All on a calcite matrix, a great example of the best quality from this find, the smaller crystals have distinctive realgar phantoms. A very attractive large cabinet piece!
Calcite with realgar
stock #5.1-085.3
Shimen (Jiepiayu) Mine, Shimen County, Changde Prefecture
Hunan Province, China
10x7.4 CM (cabinet)
price: $450

A delicate, thin, tapering (7.9CM) single calcite rises above the smaller crystals. Gemmy in places and clear enough to clearly show the bright red realgar crystals inside. A very tiny flaw at the tip is only visible from one side. Even so, this is a top display calcite at a reasonable price.
Orpiment - well crystallized on Calcite
stock #6.2-532
Shimen (Jiepiayu) Mine, Shimen County, Changde Prefecture
Hunan Province, China
5.6 x 3.6 x 3.5 CM (cabinet)
price: $950

A superb cabinet sized Orpiment with perfect, gem-clear transparent crystals in a complex cluster perched on a white Calcite matrix. Many consider this sort of Orpiment from Shimen to be the best ever found in the world, it is certainly world class when of this quality. Excellent color intensity (better in person) bright glassy luster and with some chantoyance seen in a some prisms. An older specimen from Shimen (2005) this has not been acid dipped or shows any signs of crumbling, or alteration. Specimens were sometimes enhanced in acid baths but this tended to cause degeneration over time. This is fully natural, undamaged, and with a lot of display impact. The crystals are free standing terminated with pyramidal tips and reach over 2.2 CM. Hard to render well in photos due to the many internal reflections and bright luster. Outstanding and no longer available, the mine closed a few years ago.
