The crystals are sized from druzy sprays to prisms of 3 CM and are in several habits, many are also bicolored. This is fully crystallized on all sides, overall in great condition, some contacts and minor chipping can be found on a few areas , but the best display faces are free of damage. Over the years it was working, the Jeffrey mine produced the worlds best and most colorful Vesuvianites in many habits and colors. This specimen provides many of the colors that collectors search for from here, presented in a sizable, complex piece that invites gazing. Far better in person too.

stock #AX-19-252
Sierra de la Cruz, Municipio de Sierra Mojada
Coahuila, Mexico
8.7 x 4.4 x 4.1 CM (cabinet)
price: $110

These Vesuvianites are nearly all equant, doubly terminated with a textbook form. Well-exposed by etching from contrasting white matrix these are a pleasing golden hue with lustrous surfaces. Back in the 70s these were all labeled Lago de Jaco, but now the correct locale is known to be Sierra de Las Cruz. Most crystals are quite perfect but several have cracked and rehealed or have cracked and split apart while inside the matrix. A good example with many small crystals up to 8MM.

Small but intense rich purple Vesuvianite with magenta and dark green areas. The color is deeper and more intense than the computer monitor can render well. The luster is glass-like and the specimen clearly has two generations of growth. Some of the smaller crystals show hoppered terminations. The "matrix" is a blocky crystal of Vesuvianite that shows signs of being recrystallized as well. This is the most uncommon color found at Jeffrey and essentially unknown from any other locale.
